Sweet Sunday Socks
Memories draw me back.
Sunday socks, two pair each
There were eight of us, not
counting Jim in the Army.
Sundays were dress up days
for us girls-we each had two
dresses, two pairs socks.
The rest of week jeans only
Each outfit, dresses, jeans,
socks, shoes passed to another
younger as we grew older.
But not our sweet Sunday socks
Mama calls and all scramble.
Older ones help younger ones.
After breakfast off to church
in our Sunday socks to impress
Everybody knew we all were poor
in this Kentucky coal mine town,
but those sweet socks for Sundays
I remember choosing, bought by script.
Something cherished by each one…
those sweet Sunday socks bought by us.
Susans Soul…
